Rivers overflowing and houses leaking, episodes of flooding follow one another. One figure sums up the consequences of these bad weather: a 20% increase in water damage in one year in France.
-Sunday January 26, Abdelkhalek Chabane, a roofer, has just been called for water infiltration through the roof in Armentières (North). The diagnosis is clear: dilapidated and lack of maintenance. “The wooden slats are rotten and the tiles are sagging. Water is leaking behind the tiles”he describes. The owner only realized the problem after heavy rain and snow a month ago. He has to pay 15,000 euros to redo the roof.
2024 saw 12 episodes of heavy rain, and 20% more water damage over the first ten months of the year, with an average cost of work around 1,200 euros. Some insurers refuse to compensate for work in the event of poor maintenance. “A roof is checked on average every four to five years. If your roof is completely dilapidated, you have a risk that the insurer will refuse to start work”explains Olivier Moustacakis, spokesperson for Assurland. In the Var, where roofs are adapted to the sun, most often, a waterproof layer is added under the tiles.
