A new sale dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld
Sketches, design objects, figurines…
Estate of Karl Lagerfeld. Fifth episode… The soap opera continues. “ And the audience is still as eager as ever”rejoices Pierre Mothes, Vice-President of Sotheby’s France. Karl is adored around the world like a rock star”. Since 2021, four sales have already been organized in Paris, Monaco, Cologne, intended to reimburse the sum that the designer owed to the French tax administration. Previous dispersions brought in 22.5 million. However, the debt is still not covered. Here are, therefore, another 234 lots, available online, including the furniture of his last office designed by Hedi Slimane, pillowcases and duvets monogrammed KL, the velvet box where Choupette, his beloved cat, curled up, figurines to the master’s effigy, his fashion sketches… By inventorying, at length, at great length, the interior of his residences, his three apartments in Paris and Monaco as well as his house Louveciennes, the Sotheby’s teams have unearthed all the documents likely to move the public: the albums compiled and annotated by the artist, postcards, messages scribbled on pieces of paper, wishes sent by the decorator Peter Marino, a drawing by the illustrator Antonio… Karl Lagerfeld kept everything!
Unpublished political cartoons
Attached to the past, he was no less passionate about the latest technologies. Witnesses, around twenty iPods, of all generations, are offered, among the hundred he owned. Compulsive, the “Kaiser” liked to buy objects in quantity. We knew he was witty, we discover the political caricatures that he enjoyed sketching in watercolor, felt-tip pen, makeup, Tipex: Valérie Trierweiler in front of the Elysée Palace as Marquise de Pompadour or even Angela Merkel, costumed like the heroine of “Knight of the Rose”.
Fans of the master will also snatch up the elements of his wardrobe: his sunglasses, his Dior designer jackets, his Chanel denim pants, his embroidered ties, his leather boots, his celluloid collars, a set of fans…, so many accessories that made up its inimitable and oh-so-studied look. During a recent sale, an Asian buyer paid €47,800 for five pairs of lambskin mittens, estimated at between €1,000 and €2,000. All the more touching because they were worn.
Online sale from January 24 to 31. Exhibition at Sotheby’s, 83 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008 Paris, sothebys.com
