As part of Molière month, Altigone presents “Le Médecin spite Lui” by the company L’Esquisse.
Drawing closer to the medieval origins of this farce, the curtain opens on a tavern where young people celebrate, singing and drinking.
But when it comes time to pay their bill, a few crowns are missing. After a lively discussion with the tavern owner and the discovery that this group is in fact a theater troupe, it is decided to find money, to present a show to the villagers which will be “The Doctor in Spite of Himself”.
From there, the fourth wall is shattered and the show begins by staging Molière’s farce, the relationships between actors and those that are created with the spectators. This is the originality of this production.
As Molière wanted, the spirit of the farce is respected. A simple game dominated by comic gestures, blows with sticks, chases, misunderstandings, very popular and always impactful. A simple story among simple people: Sganarelle, a bottle-loving bundler, a bad husband, is promoted to doctor in spite of himself. A love affair between young people, forbidden by the girl’s father. How Sganarelle finds herself helping lovers…
A play where Molière settles scores with medicine, under the cover of laughter and derision. But above all, a dynamic, swirling and funny comedy which takes you into a universe mixing Italian comedy, fabliau and Middle Ages farce.
