Cello thieves worth more than 1 million euros sentenced

The Franco-Swiss musician’s instrument was stolen from her home in September. He was found by the police at the end of November.

At the end of last week, the Thonon-les-Bains Court convicted three men for the theft and concealment of a precious Goffriller cello from 1737, estimated at 1.4 million euros, reports 3 Regions.

The instrument, loaned for twenty years to the Franco-Swiss cellist Ophélie Gaillard by the CIC bank, as well as two bows worth 45,000 euros each had been stolen from his home in Haute-Savoie last September while he was sleeping.

At the end of November, after two months of investigation and a vast operation carried out in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, the gendarmes found the cello and arrested three suspects.

The three individuals aged 21 to 50 were found guilty of theft and receiving the instrument. Two of them received 1 year in prison each, while the third was sentenced to 8 months in prison. According to their testimonies according to which they claimed to be unaware of its value, the cello was not their target.

The instrument, which had already been stolen in 2018 in Pantinwas found in good condition and will soon be returned to its owner, who expresses her relief after months of worry.
