Will “Babygirl” be the new “50 Shades of Grey”?

Will “Babygirl” be the new “50 Shades of Grey”?

Nicole Kidman is having fun in Babygirl by Halina Reijn and this choice earned her the Volpi Cup, the acting prize at the Venice Film Festival. The actress had already proven that she was not afraid in Eyes Wide Shut de Stanley Kubrick where she had naughty adventures with her companion at the time Tom Cruise. Or even in Paperboy by Lee Daniels where she shared prank sequences with Zac Efron.

After these sulphurous tales, it is in the shoes of a powerful “pedegère” who runs the gailledou with a young intern from her company that the fifty-year-old actress unleashes herself to Babygirl. She abandons her husband incapable of transporting her to 7th heaven (Antonio Banderas) to find ecstasy in the arms of a muscular sinew played by Harris Dickinson, discovered in Without filter by Ruben Östlund. He is half her age and arguments so persuasive that this powerful woman loses all common sense. She throws herself into his tattooed arms and accepts that he gives her orders in the bedroom, even if it means sacrificing career and family to satisfy his fantasies.

Liberated, delivered (or almost)

Going after Stanley Kubrick is not easy. It is frankly recommended not to try to measure Babygirl in the light ofEyes Wide Shut. We would rather be in the register of 50 Shades of Grey with its flabby butt scenes which nevertheless titillated the American public. The beautiful Nicole seems to be having fun and we are happy for her. We are also delighted that a film shows that a mature woman can feel pleasure but despite a brilliant performance by the actress, the whole thing turns out to be quite unexciting.

The sex scenes are less daring than those in an M6 erotic film and anyone who goes to the theater in the hope of feeling tingles in the lower abdomen can expect a severe disappointment. Certainly, the heroine is an adulterer and has sex with a kid half her age. Yes, she even watches porn while he works her. Okay, she gets on her knees when he asks her to. Okay, these two look like they're having a blast, but when the height of domination involves coming over to her house uninvited to give her a computer back, it kind of feels like a sitcom. artsy.

Sad flesh

Selling the film as a sexy thriller is a double-edged sword. The public will perhaps let themselves be attracted by this sulphurous side as well as by the hope of “olé-olé” sequences. He risks finding that the whole thing lacks spices. As in 50 Shades of Greythe message and the images remain wise with a little unpleasant aftertaste of puritanism that the end underlines.

If the Dutch filmmaker claims to be Paul Verhoeven who sowed scandal with works like Basic Instinct et Blessedshe does not dare to explore female sexuality head-on and without fuss. The flesh is not joyful in Babygirl which brings it closer to 50 Shades of Grey with additional Nicole Kidman and less of the junk romance. This conventional study of morals is really more “corny” than “ass”.
