The Nosferatu actor dreams of playing Batman’s sworn enemy in the DCU. A wish that seems relevant due to the talent of the actor and his ability to play eccentric characters. It remains to be seen whether he will manage to convince the director.

Bill Skarsgård, known for his transformative roles, has expressed his desire to play the Joker in the DC Universe. In an interview with journalist Josh Horowitz, he said: “I got a fucking awesome Joker in mei”. Skarsgård’s interest in the role comes at a time when the DCU is being created by James Gunn. It gradually introduces the world of Batman, with the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold expected to introduce the next iteration of the Dark Knight and perhaps the Joker. Skarsgård even considered the idea of playing both Batman and the Joker, perhaps as a “schizophrenic” version of the Dark Knight. He imagined a scenario where a single actor plays both characters, like twins in other films, where the actors would swap costumes and play opposite each other.

For 16 years, live-action Joker performances have largely adhered to the down-to-earth style established by Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. Actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Leto, while offering distinct performances, have maintained this ultra-realistic style. However, Skarsgård’s Joker may take inspiration from Jack Nicholson’s more flamboyant and theatrical version in the 1989 Batman film, which featured comical weapons, uniformed henchmen, and multiple costume changes. Skarsgård’s performance as the killer clown in It has of course fueled speculation about his potential as the Joker. He embodied the supernatural nature of the character by mixing horror, humor and physicality. He also added creepy eye movements and a crooked smile to the character without CGI. To make matters worse, the director of It, Andy Muschietti, also directs The Brave and the Bold, making Skarsgård casting more likely. Just as James Gunn is known for bringing in collaborators for DCU projects, Muschietti could do the same.

A great performance in Nosferatu

Bill Skarsgård’s journey to playing Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu was far from easy. Initially, Skarsgård was considered for the role of Thomas Hutter, while Mads Mikkelsen and Willem Dafoe were among the first choices for the vampire. Skarsgård even read for the role of Friedrich Harding before getting the role of Hutter. However, the project was shelved and Eggers went on to direct The Lighthouse and The Northman. When Nosferatu was revived, Skarsgård was surprised to receive an offer to play Orlok, with the roles of Friedrich and Hutter having already been given. A casting decision that led to Skarsgård delivering “a phenomenal performance as the big bad” in the film. Skarsgård worked with an opera singer to lower his voice an octave, and described the experience of playing such an evil character as profoundly impactful. In fact, he stated that he “never wanted to play something so evil again”.
