A literary masterpiece written by Gabriel García Márquez in 1967, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” has always been considered unsuitable for cinema. Netflix has made a long series, to be seen since December 11, which delves into the generations of the Buendia clan in a fantastic Colombia.
“Many years later, facing the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon during which his father took him to get to know ice.” It is with these words that the 467-page novel by Colombian Literature Nobelist Gabriel García Márquez opens. And this is also how the series by Laura Mora and Álex García López produced by Netflix begins, which faithfully takes up the story of this dense saga telling the tragic story of the Buendia family over seven generations.
Published in 1967, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” enjoyed immense popular success, selling more than fifty million copies. Translated into more than forty languages, it is considered a masterpiece of Spanish-American and world literature.
A successful adaptation
You had to be crazy to bring this founding work of magical realism to the screen. Its author was also opposed to it during his lifetime. His heirs have given their agreement for a long series of more than sixteen hours, shot in Colombia with resources equal to the masterpiece of Gabriel García Márquez.
“We find ourselves in a certain visual interpretation which is completely fascinating and we also find the magic and the fantasy which exists in the book, as well as the symbolism which really reigns throughout the novel. I was quite moved when I watched this, because I found that the adaptation did justice to the book”, indicates in the 7:30 p.m. of January 5 Maral Mohsenin, programmer of the Geneva International Film Festival.
In this series we find the moving rhythm of the work which oscillates between dream and nightmare, consanguineous loves, but also incest, fury and innocence. Only the beauty and power of Gabriel García Márquez’s words escape this saga.
