- The Oriental-Vevey Theater is celebrating ten years of contemporary dance creations.
- Cie Tumbleweed presents “A Very Eye”, showing interculturality and collective negotiation, and Amina Abouelghar and Laure Betris explore memory in “Young Dreams”.
Like a call to stretch yourself in the new year. The Oriental-Vevey theater will turn into a dance stage from January 8 to 12 with two duets and two worlds to discover. “To mark these ten years, there will be a special evening on Saturday. The opportunity for the public to take their turn dancing!”, rejoices programmer Jasmine Morand.
For its jubilee, this event dedicated to contemporary dance will offer a festive program. Like a beam of light piercing the winter darkness, two pearls of contemporary creation will be in the spotlight.
«A Very Eye»: Compagnie Tumbleweed
Based in Zurich and Brussels, this company returns to the Oriental after a first visit six years ago. “Tumbleweed presented its first duet in Vevey, “The Gyre”, which was then a hit internationally, specifies Jasmine Morand. For the 10th anniversary of the Chorégraphiques, I found it important to honor this discovery and to promote the work of a company in which we believe.”
Made up of Angela Rabaglio and Micaël Florentz, this year the company presents its group piece, “A Very Eye”. A creation that shows “the beauty of the crowd, its mechanisms and its intelligence”. Going against the grain, the two dancers choose to show an example of interculturality and collective negotiation. “We wanted to remind people that our profession is connected to the community,” specify the two choreographers.
«Young Dreams»: A. Abouelghar et L. Betris
The second show to discover is a performance by Amina Abouelghar and Laure Betris. “These two artists came for a residency at Dansomètre last year, and I fell in love with their project and with the artists themselves,” explains Jasmine Morand.
Coupling the voice and the body is the exploration that brought together the Swiss musician and the Egyptian dancer in this piece “Young Dreams”. A sensitive research between sounds and movements, which retrace individual and collective memories. “This performance was constructed as a dialogue between dance and music, around the notion of memory,” reveals Laure Betris. This inner journey speaks to both of us.”
A unique meeting
At the origin of this event dedicated to contemporary creation, there was the reopening of the Oriental theater in 2014, after five years of closure. “We then offered to organize a dance program,” recalls Jasmine Morand. Lighting carried out in conjunction with the Dansomètre.” Their objective: to create a regular meeting to promote contemporary creation.
Over the years, the concept has always been able to renew itself and adapt to the needs of the stage and public demand. “We have notably reduced the projects to now program two each edition, which makes it possible to offer a better envelope to artists.” Since the beginning, the Choreographers have also been keen to unveil Swiss premieres. A way to support not only the production of shows, but also their distribution. “We seek to break the vicious circle of excessive production,” assures the founder of Dansomètre. This allows creations to be promoted on tour.”
Les Chorégraphiques, from January 8 to 12, 2025. Théâtre Oriental-Vevey, rue d’Italie 22, Vevey.
