After “Elvis”, Baz Luhrmann will make a documentary on the King

After his biopic released in 2022, the director is preparing a documentary on the legendary rock singer.

Baz Luhrmann isn’t done with Elvis. Two years after the release of the biopic which earned Austin Butler a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama film and garnered no less than eight Oscar nominations, Luhrmann returns to the charge. Indeed, Variety revealed on December 13 that, during the making of the film, the filmmaker and his team unearthed video archives that had never before been shown. Which will serve as material for a brand new documentary dedicated to the King.

The archives in question belong to Authentic Brands Group, which will produce the film. The label represents a certain number of public figures and brands, and has recently been working on producing films and series featuring them.

A first documentary film

The upcoming film will be the first documentary by Baz Luhrmann, until now a specialist in feature-length fiction films with a baroque style and frenetic editing. It remains to be seen how his unique style translates to the documentary genre. At the same time, Baz Lurhmann is still preparing a biopic on Joan of Arc produced by Warner Bros.
