Eating disorders, complex relationship with her father… Lara Fabian reveals herself as rarely before with I am hereson 17e album. An “eminently liberating” exercise for the singer.
“There is no settling of scores in this album, any more than there is any bitterness or resentment,” says Lara Fabian from the outset.
Indeed, the singer refers more to a series of “free and open letters which everyone can use if they wish”. Because over the course of the 10 titles gathered on I am herelaunched at the end of last month, Lara Fabian explores love in all its facets, whether lost or found, saving or destructive.
A flower in the mouth
But even if she wanted to make each of her missives universal, they are all anchored in her past. Of the lot, the song A flower in the mouth has already caused a lot of ink to flow, Lara Fabian evoking both an eating disorder and a complex relationship with her father, with whom she “begged” at the age of 13, a French expression meaning to beg for food. money to passers-by.
If this story made the headlines of the European sensational press, Lara Fabian evokes it with humor and tenderness in a telephone interview with The Journal.
“He wanted to teach me the value of money. He took me, with his guitar, to the Galerie de la Reine and we begged for a few hours so I could buy the beautiful sweater I wanted. In fact, it was a brilliant idea: I learned that I had to work to have this item of clothing, which must have been worth the equivalent of $300 at the time,” she confides.
“It gives them a lot of hope”
Her missives launched in this album have clearly already started to do useful work: Lara Fabian has already received testimonials from fans on her social networks, who say they are touched by her victory against an eating disorder “more complex than bulimia”.
“It gives them a lot of hope, they were reassured to know that it is possible to get their hands on it and get rid of this strange animal that is the eating disorder,” she explains.
Something she obviously succeeded in doing. But that was not necessarily easy to achieve.
“It took a long time. It was a multitude of wonderful encounters with extraordinary women who, in turn, were so available and gave me so much love that I ended up looking at myself and saying: you’re okay, Lara. But it took time, it didn’t happen in two minutes,” she says.
