Angelina Jolie has spoken out again about why she thinks she had so many insecurities about her singing ability.
The 49-year-old actress, who plays opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, spoke with the star of Wicked, Cynthia Erivo, for a numberActors On Actors de Variety.
During the interview, she returned to the time she said that learning to sing was like therapy.
“People keep quoting me because I admitted, rightly, that it was like therapy. But it really is, she said. Because I didn’t realize that practicing and learning to sing was one thing, but what was really difficult for me was finding my voice and letting it express itself. I was very emotional about it. I didn’t realize how much I had lost my voice. Maybe when I lost my mother, maybe when someone hurt me, whatever it was, the different things that made her smaller and locked her away.”
Angelina Jolie, however, was very nervous about singing before accepting the role.
“I was terrified. But I think it’s a gift for an artist – and I know you felt it for your film too – when you’re not sure you can do it, she said. You’re not sure you’re good enough. The task, the challenge, is set, and you feel small.”
The Oscar winner then told her 37-year-old colleague that she had taken her children to see Wicked.
“I remember taking my daughter, several of my children, but I remember the moment when one of my daughters watched Defying Gravityshe noted. Because as a mother, we want art to have an influence… I said to myself at that moment: “Oh, she needs this, she feels this desire to know that there is endless possibilities and something within her that she has yet to discover.”
