Belgian-Cameroonian Lubiana reconnects with her African roots

Spotlight today on a young Belgian-Cameroonian artist. Her name is Lubiana. She is a storyteller, composer, singer, and also a kora player, this traditional West African instrument. Lubiana recently released her second album, Red Earth.

For this record, Lubiana was inspired by the color of the land of her ancestors, in the village of Bangoua in western Cameroon. On the cover, a photo shows her as a child, walking all smiles on this earth reddened by iron. For the young woman, this album is above all a return to her origins.

Through the titles, we discover some of the sources of inspiration that accompanied Lubiana. In particular the teachings given to him by one of the great masters of the kora, Toumani Diabaté (disappeared in July 2024) and which we hear on one of the titles entitled “Mali”. This was one of his last collaborations. Lubiana also shares another duet on this disc, “Farafina Mousso”, with the Franco-Rwandan singer and writer Gaël Faye.

She will be in concert on December 12, 2024 on the stage of the 360 Factory, a cultural space in the heart of the Goutte d’Or district.
