“Since its historic creation in September 2001, the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) has brought together the most emblematic figures of world cinema, positioning Morocco as a destination of choice for the filming of major international productions. This initiative also played a crucial role in revitalizing the national film industry and in the emergence of new talents.declared Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Festival Foundation.
In a message published on the official website of the Festival on the occasion of its 21st edition, which takes place from November 29 to December 7, His Royal Highness recalled that, in accordance with the directions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, “ our commitment to promoting and supporting our young cinematic talents has never wavered. This commitment, nourished by various training and development initiatives, gave birth to the Atlas Workshops.”
Les Ateliers de l’Atlas: a talent incubator
Launched in 2018 by the Festival Foundation, this program has become a true incubator for emerging Moroccan, Arab and African filmmakers. HRH Prince Moulay Rachid underlined that the Ateliers de l’Atlas have supported hundreds of project leaders, allowing the emergence of a new generation of directors. Among them, Asmae El Mudir made history by becoming the first Moroccan to win the Festival’s Golden Star with her film The Mother of All Lieswhich had been supported and awarded twice as part of the Workshops.
“This success, which inspires future generations, is part of the evolution of the film industry in Morocco, where national production reached 34 films in 2023”specified Prince Moulay Rachid.
A growing ecosystem
To continue strengthening the national cinematographic ecosystem, the Ateliers de l’Atlas were enriched this year with Atlas Station, a new program intended for young Moroccan professionals. This initiative aims to develop their skills while opening them up internationally.
Furthermore, Prince Moulay Rachid underlined the essential role of film critics and journalists in the development of the industry, announcing the establishment of development sessions for these professionals.
A rich and prestigious program
The 21st edition of the FIFM will pay tribute to three major figures: the late Naïma Elmcherqui, icon of Moroccan cinema, the American actor and director Sean Penn, two-time Oscar winner, and the Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg. This edition’s jury, chaired by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, will have the mission of discovering the most promising talents. In addition, the Conversations will offer festival-goers exclusive meetings with renowned directors such as Tim Burton and Alfonso Cuarón.
