The Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) opens Friday evening in Neuchâtel in the presence of Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. Italian actress Asia Argento is the guest of honour at the festival, which runs until 13 July.

The film “Animale”, which is competing in the international competition, will be screened at the opening ceremony. French director Emma Benestan and actress Oulaya Amamra will be in Neuchâtel on Friday to talk about it.

The opening ceremony will also see the handover of the presidency of the NIFFF. State Councillor Baptiste Hurni (PS) will succeed journalist Nathalie Randin, who has chaired the event for five editions. However, Baptiste Hurni will not officially take up his duties until the end of this edition.

The festival will feature 124 works, including 12 world premieres. The films screened come from 46 countries and five continents. The Italian actress, director, screenwriter, producer, singer and DJ, very involved in the #MeToo movement, Asia Argento is the guest of honor of this 23rd edition.

The jury of the international competition is composed of Saul Pandelakis (France), Ishan Shukla (India), Annick Mahnert (Switzerland), João Pedro Rodrigues (Portugal) and Kourtney Roy (Canada). On July 13, it will award the Narcisse HR Giger Prize, endowed with 10,000 francs by the City of Neuchâtel.

In 2023, overall attendance at the NIFFF reached a record 63,000 people.
