In an interview given to the American podcast “Talking Pictures” this Tuesday, November 26, Margot Robbie confided that she still did not understand the flop of one of her films released in 2022.
Margot Robbie always asks herself the question: why the film Babylon, in which she plays opposite Brad Pitt, didn’t it work?
“I don’t understand why people hated the film”
All the ingredients were there for the feature film directed by Damien Chazelle, to whom we owe the excellent La La Landbe a success. Firstly, a colossal budget of 80 million dollars, but also a five-star cast with Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire and Emma Stone, without forgetting an ambitious and exciting pitch behind the scenes of Hollywood in the 1920s. And yet, none of this attracted spectators to theaters. At least not in the United States, where this three-hour fresco was a huge flop, generating only $15 million in revenue. Two years after the release of BabylonMargot Robbie can’t get over this oven.
“I don’t understand. I know it’s biased because I was involved in the project, but I still don’t understand why people hated the film,” she confides in an interview with the American podcast Talking Pictures Tuesday November 26. The star, who has since enjoyed phenomenal success with Barbiehopes that time will do justice to Babylon : “I wonder if in 20 years people will say: ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t work back then? That’s crazy’. Like when we realize that The Escapees was a failure upon release. How is that possible?”
Margot Robbie has all the more difficulty recovering from this failure as she loved playing in the film and being directed by Damien Chazelle. “He’s so meticulous,” says the Australian actress. “You know why I loved working with him so much? He always wanted us to go all out. He always wanted more. Even before filming, during preparation.” A small consolation prize for the actress, Babylon worked well in France with 1.5 million spectators.
