The American magazine Vanity Fair published this Monday the first official images of the sequel to “Gladiator”, also directed by Ridley Scott.

The veil is lifted a little more on the highly anticipated sequel to Gladiator. The American magazine Vanity Fair published this Monday, July 1, a dozen photos of Gladiator 2, a week before the release of a first trailer.

Exit Russell Crowe, Oscar for best actor in 2001 for his role as Maximus in the original film. The majority of the shots feature the new main character, Lucius, and the actor who plays him: Irish actor Paul Mescal, star of the series. Normal People and himself nominated for an Oscar for his performance in After sun.

“I wanted to do as many of the stunts as possible myself,” Mescal told Vanity Fair. “There were a couple of things I couldn’t do because of insurance, but I wanted to be in the forefront.”

For those who don’t remember the first opus, Lucius, then a child, already appeared in Gladiator. He is the nephew of the Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoneix) and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). The latter also makes her return in front of the camera you veteran Ridley Scott.

Denzel Washington au casting

In one of the photos, we can see Paul Mescal sword in hand and facing in an arena one of the other big names in the cast, Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Last of Us). He will play Acacius, a fallen Roman general.

Another shot shows Denzel Washington as Macrinus, an arms dealer who apparently lives in luxury and runs a stable of gladiators. Gladiator 2 marks the great reunion between the actor and Ridley Scott, 17 years after the release ofAmerican Gangster.

To know if Gladiator 2 lives up to its predecessor, which had accumulated almost 5 million spectators in France alone, we will have to wait a few more months. The film will be released in November in American and French theaters.
