Duke of Sussex introduces students at Vancouver elementary school to adaptive sports
On Sunday, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, surprised Canadian viewers by appearing on screen during an American football match. Prince Harry has arrived in Vancouver, southwest of Canada, and is visiting the infrastructure that will be used to host the next Invictus Games. The Vancouver stadium will, for example, be the location where the opening ceremony will take place. Prince Harry is making this visit alone, without his wife Meghan Markle.

Monday November 18, 2024, Prince Harry, 40, made another surprise appearance, this time in a primary school. At Shaughnessy Elementary School, the children took part in a sports workshop for discovery and introduction to disciplines adapted to people with disabilities. Prince Harry himself took part in a sitting volleyball match. The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry, is a major competition that is inspired by how the Olympic Games work, except that the athletes are all veterans or wounded soldiers.

Some disciplines from the Paralympic Games are present at the Invictus Games, the 7th edition of which will take place in Vancouver and Whistler, a winter resort in British Columbia, from February 8 to 16, 2025. The first Invictus Games took place in London in 2014 and Canada already hosted the Invictus Games in 2017 in Toronto. This is the first edition which will also host adapted winter sports. To mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, several parallel initiatives are being organized this year. For example, at this primary school, Prince Harry launched an online curriculum offering educational resources on the history and purpose of the Invictus Games.

During this visit, Prince Harry took the time to interact with the children, then he participated in a coloring workshop, and he read the poem entitled “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. It is this poem that gave its name to the games. Speaking to some veterans present and the organizers of this school visit, CBC reports that the Duke of Sussex said: “This is where Invictus begins to expand even further, beyond the Invictus community, into schools across Canada and hopefully around the world as well. Seeing this program in action today, one can really feel the energy, enthusiasm and learning happening in this room. »
