Samba Mballo, better known under the pseudonym “Bathie” and a prominent member of the group Gelongal, died this Sunday, plunging the Senegalese music scene into mourning.
An emblematic figure of urban music in Senegal, Bathie was appreciated for his talent and his commitment to promoting local culture through modern rhythms and strong messages. The circumstances of his disappearance were shrouded in mystery until journalist Cheikh Yerim Seck, close to the group, shared details three days after the announcement.

“He fell down a flight of stairs. Then he underwent an operation, but unfortunately he did not survive,” revealed Cheikh Yerim Seck, close to the Gélongal group with whom he worked in the series “Un Café Avec”. Gelongal, a noted group in Senegalese culture, has left its mark on generations with notable productions such as the series “Un Café Avec”, a project in which Cheikh Yerim Seck had collaborated with them.
