The first edition of Quartz dates back to 1989, the last to 2019. It was before the Covid crisis and the renovation work of the Brest temple of culture. So the return of European Short Film Festival in his garden was particularly awaited. “There is a lot of impatience and enthusiasm”confirms Maïwenn Thominot, the new director of the festival.
Rediscover the affluence of the good years
The large theater, the small theater and the meridian should be full for six days. “We expect to have a lot of people, we even have a return of people who have not come for several years.” Because the event had lost its splendor thanks to nomadic or even digital editions (2020). The number of spectators was almost halved in 5 years (15,500 entries in 2023). “There is clearly an issue in terms of ticketing, we hope to find a very large audience”says Marine Cam, the programmer.
She watched 1,517 films to remember… 154. Only first films, because Brest is still a springboard for emerging filmmakers. A very equal selection (48% female directors). The official competition will involve 29 short films, divided into 7 programs (three European, three French and one Breton). As usual, the festival will give pride of place to young audiences (8 programs), without forgetting the Brest Off.
