As usual, Xavier Beauvois signs the script for the film he is directing. Both intimate and universal, this is not the only paradox of The Valley of Fools which brings together a duo in tune, Jean-Paul Rouve and Pierre Richard, in a warm and dramatic story, where dreams and reality confront and intertwine in a most touching inner quest.
Take the bar and cross The Valley of Fools from Wednesday November 13, 2024 in theaters.
The Valley of Fools is not a film about sailing or the Vendée Globe, but about a man who is searching for himself, Jean-Paul (Jean-Paul Rouve). To find himself, he decided to experience the Vendée Globe solo sailing race virtually, via the Virtual Regatta digital platform, in his sailboat installed at the bottom of his garden. In constant communication with his friend Pierre (Pierre Richard) and his daughter Camille (Madeleine Beauvois), he will live an experience with the aim of rebuilding himself.
The identification of the two main actors of The Valley of Fools to their role, by their own first names (Jean-Paul and Pierre) confirms their involvement in a film in which they recognized themselves. History of initiation and friendship, The Valley of Fools focuses on a man who seeks to take responsibility for his daughter whom he raises alone, and must go through an ordeal to achieve this. Overcoming your alcoholism is one, coming face to face with yourself, taking stock, are two others.
Pierre’s external view of Jean-Paul is like a point of reference for the latter, and he will not resist getting off his boat to find him before the end of the three months of the race to take stock with him. Suffice to say that it is not the race that counts, but his reunion with himself.
Xavier Beauvois once again demonstrates his talent as a teller of original stories which, starting from the individual, touch the universal. The salt comes partly from the paradoxes that inhabit his film. Jean-Paul goes to sea in his garden, his boat is on land, he isolates himself, but never stops communicating with Pierre… Everything comes together in The Valley of Fools to convey the idea that we cannot do anything alone, and that if we want to find ourselves, we can only do it with others.
