Sunday November 10, 2024to close the Théâtrales in Villerville () where four shows will be offered, the young company The Ethereal Voguers will present The scarecrow according to Anton Tchekhov.

A production for all audiences, where the four actors juggle between theater, cirque et danse. Meeting with Louis Romeodirector for Les Vogueurs Éthérés.

“We started with a very dynamic staging”

Can you introduce us to your company?

It’s a young company created in 2020-2021 in , which mainly brings together school friends with whom we wanted to set up projects, particularly classical theater, and to create a point of convergence because we are artists who come from different backgrounds. In the troupe, we have a circus performer, a dancer, a singer… We wanted to bring these arts together and create a multidisciplinary theater.

Why did you choose to adapt Chekhov?

The idea is to dust off Chekhov, even if I don’t find him dusty. But we want to bring an energy that is difficult to find in Chekhov when we see what is done in the productions. We want to shake up all that. We started with a very dynamic production, full of energy. And that’s why we put a lot of art into it: acrobatics, stunts, dance… We wanted to kick the anthill.

“It’s universal humor”

You are adapting three of these works, correct?

We started with a somewhat marginal work in Chekhov’s bibliography. He wrote short one-act plays, which are quite far from his large tragic plays that we know like The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard or Uncle Vania. These are UFOs in his work, which have overtones of boulevard comedies à la Feydeau, but which also have a real depth and richness, a real psychological finesse.

The mix is quite special and we wanted to bring these comedies to life to both resonate the tragedy which is always underlying, but also to give laughter the greatest chance. Chekhov can be very funny when he wants to be.

And on stage, the audience will witness a mix of art?

The staging is really very accessible. The example that I take, humbly, without comparing myself to his genius, is Louis de Funès. I remember, at 5 or 6 years old, being doubled over laughing at his films, even if I didn’t necessarily understand all the ins and outs. We also have a game that we try to make very expressive, like de Funès, and we also add visual art, stunts, dance, clowns…

It is therefore for all audiences, for those who are not necessarily used to going to the theater or children. At the festival, when we played it, we were lucky to have an audience that was sometimes very young, and they sometimes laughed more than the adults. It was pretty great, but that’s because it’s a universal Laurel and Hardy humor that speaks to everyone.

The Scarecrow after Anton Chekhov, Sunday November 10, at 8:30 p.m., at the Garage, in Villerville. Prices: €10 per show or €30 for all four shows. Information and reservations on the website www.theatrechezcolette.fr. You can also go to the Villerville postal agency (02 31 14 89 10).
