Embark on Mayerling’s drama on the stage of the Palais Garnier.

Mayerling is a ballet in three acts choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan to music by Franz Liszt, first performed in 1978 at the Royal Opera House, London. Inspired by Mayerling's drama which took place in 1889, it depicts the double murder-suicide of Prince Rodolphe and his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera.
Kenneth MacMillan therefore designed this ballet in 1978 in London which entered the repertoire of the National Opera in 2022. Prey to addictions and suicidal thoughts, a character tormented and mistreated by History, Rodolphe allows the choreographer to develop themes that are dear to him.
To the music of Franz Liszt, Mayerling deploys a choreography of great theatricality. Grandiose scenes intertwine with intimate scenes, in sumptuous costumes whose autumnal hues reflect the decline of a world set to disappear.
