THE worship seasons of lille3000 which stretch over months to Lille (North) and in the municipalities of its metropolis continue well after their event closes. After the big parade, the exhibitions in the city and in cultural places and all these variations, it continues thanks in particular to these giants. Ces imaginary characters Some remain in the metropolis, as we explained to you in the first part of this subject; others explore other lands, sometimes well beyond our borders… Zoom on the fabulous destiny of certain symbolic works of lille3000heritage association of Lille 2004, European capital of culture.

Loans or acquisitions, sometimes to order

First of all, you should know that these large statues of Lille3000, which can be seen on the “rambla” of rue Faidherbe during the seasons, each have their own story. They are sometimes loans, other times acquisitions from the Lille3000 association, project manager for each season.

If we take the famous “Moss people” from the latest season, Utopia, their destiny is quite extraordinary. “Basically, the characters of the Moss People [peuple de mousse imaginaire vivant dans une forêt des pays nordiques, NLDR] were created by Kim Simonsson in her workshop. We ordered them in an XXL version for Utopia,” explains Sacha Dewavrin, in charge of visual arts for lille3000. They were also made in a workshop in Marquette-lez-Lille, before being transported to rue Faidherbe to be installed one evening, shortly before the grand opening parade of Utopia.

The association was able to acquire one of the characters created tailor-made for the metropolis: La Respiration, installed at Eurotéléport in Roubaix. She is also the owner of the baby angel-demons from the 2009 Europe XXL season, scattered throughout the Lille metropolis.

Travels around the world before… a return to the forest

“The Moss People are destined to return to the forest,” announced their creator during one of his visits to Lille. This will be done at another time. For now, they are traveling. “Some went to Miami, for the Miami Fair, the Doctor and the Philosopher,” relates Sacha Dewavrin. Four others were taken to Helsinki, in front of the Amos Rex museum; another in Austria, on a square in the center of Gmunden. “A whole program is imagined around certain installations,” shares the Lille3000 representative.

Arches in Angoulême, Nanitos in … before Morocco

For each of the great creations that travel the world, their stops have meaning. Proof of this is the installation of futuristic pop culture arches by Jean-Claude Mézières, made for Lille 2004, the association’s very first season. They will be installed in Angoulême, for the next – and very renowned – comic book festival.

During the Utopia season, the creations of Jean-François Fourtou were particularly noted on the Comtesse island. Nanitos and Maxitos will be present in 2024 “in Reims at the Domaine de Vranken-Pommery, while Ramakech, the artist’s sculpture park, is preparing to open its doors to the public in Marrakech”, it is described on its website Internet.

The Nanitos, imagined by Jean-François Fourtou, come to various places in Lille, during the Utopia cultural season (here in the gardens of the Hospice Comtesse).

The Source d’Abondance, which was designed by the northern cartoonist François Boucq, is also intended to be installed in Roncq soon, we are told by lille3000.

Statues to see in the Lille metropolis

In the Lille metropolis, some are well established. In Roubaix, La Respiration (Moss People) welcomes you at the exit of the Eurotéléport station. Near the swimming pool stands one of the alebrijes of the ELDORADO season dedicated to Mexico, El Gato. The Tulips of Shangri-La have a home in the center of Lille, between the two stations, and the baby angels/demons of Europe XXL (2009) have taken up residence at the Saint-Sauveur station in Lille and at the Convent from Roubaix.

For a little over 20 years they have adorned Place François Mitterrand in Lille. “This strange pop-looking bouquet, 7 meters high, is a reference to the marvelous landscapes of the imaginary and utopian land of Shangri-La”, presents @lille3000 #art #arturbain #pop #lille #lillemaville #lilleculture #streetart

A new season is coming, in 2025, with Fiesta! It is being prepared slowly with the first workshops launched in October. “There will be exhibitions, installations, events in the 95 municipalities of the MEL,” recalls Sacha Dewavrin. “It’s going to be sprawling!” » Strongly.
