By purchasing his beautiful home in Montreal 17 years ago, Marie-Chantal Perron said she was convinced that she would sell it between 55 and 60 years old. At 57, because his heart calls him elsewhere, his residence is indeed for sale. With her Captain Love and their four cats, the author of the novel The other me settled in Cap-Chat in Gaspésie, a destination that offers her everything at once: the sea, the mountains and inspiration.
Marie-Chantal, have you sold your house?
Not yet. I can’t wait to build a different nest in Montreal. I had the chance to live in this large 1890 house for 17 years. I also have a large house in Cap-Chat. Two houses are a lot of costs, responsibilities… When I bought it, I told myself that I was going to sell it between 55 and 60 years old; I am 57 years old. The parties that were held in this house…! I know that those who buy it will experience great happiness there. She will give lots of love to the next owners.
You live more and more in Gaspésie, if I understand correctly?
Yes, and I’m super happy there. Often, when I come to Montreal, Captain Love stays in Cap-Chat. We are so happy there! We have mental space. I wrote my second novel there. It’s easy to work in this house, it breathes differently. I have been in concrete all my life… But I still plan to come back to the city to work, shoot, do my things.
However, you are not native to this region…
No, I was born in Châteauguay. I left home when I was 16. I discovered Gaspésie while turning Summit meetingswith Patrice Godin. I did 7 mountains in 10 days. It was like an epiphany for me. All this is in Quebec, a few hours from Montreal! I’m stuck on the Magdalen Islands, but in Gaspésie, in addition to the sea, there are mountains, and it’s less far… When I came back, I kept saying to my boyfriend: “I have to take you there!” Then, at one point, he said to me: “The chalet we are looking for, why can’t we find it near Gaspésie?” Her daughter, Lili, was 18 at the time. She is 20 now and she is crazy about Gaspésie. I searched on Centris and found Cap-Chat, the contraction of Captain and cat. I have four cats with my Captain… in Cap-Chat! Even in a novel, we would find it too big!
