Apart from the tributes where we see radiant stars, the competition has for several years chosen filmmakers who have only one or two productions under their belt. The stars are therefore invited to head to the locker rooms. But come to think of it, we may be prematurely wrong. These young directors are set to make a name for themselves, to become the great filmmakers of tomorrow and the FIFM would say that they started, in part, with it. Not a stupid approach. But before, this festival was teeming with stars and was noticed by the country’s cinemas honored at each of its editions. Let’s return to those we are celebrating this year, starting with the sweetest of the sweet actresses, who left on October 5, 2024, reminding us beforehand that life is meant to be lived with love and respect. The day after its final journey, we described it here as follows: What remains to be said when a monument collapses? Desolation, here we are. The love for such a pyramid can only swell until the heart gives up and starts beating again in memory of everything it transmits, a beautiful back and forth between admiration and melancholy. Mourning the disappearance of this beautiful soul is ultimately a tribute to a heart dripping with strong sensitivities and to an aggregate of roles portrayed with gentleness, pain, delicacy, humor… and this incredible finesse. Nothing escapes Naima Elmcherqui. She hits while caressing, gets angry while smiling. Unique and rigorously multiple, she administers the most intense slaps of humility. Beautiful until her departure, she shows the way to happiness. With the man of her life, of all her life – the director and theater man Abderrahmane Khayat -, she develops her art, starts a family and freely consumes her hobby: “A fusional couple”, insists their daughter Yasmine, journalist at Canadian television for several years (…) A strong-themed artist, she is involved in social work, sits on the Council of the High Audiovisual Authority, quietly supervises young aspirants to the practice of the art of theatrical and cinematographic interpretation. She says everything, does the essentials.
The underground and the horrific
The other two consecrated are one American and the second Canadian. The first is called Sean Penn and has enjoyed a reputation as a screen flirt for several decades. In the text shared by the FNFM Foundation, we read that “Sean Penn, actor, filmmaker and author awarded two Oscars, has become an American icon through a career spanning more than forty years. He was nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Actor, for ”The Last Walk” (Tim Robbins, 1995), ”Agreements and Disagreements” (Woody Allen, 2000), ”Sam I am Sam” ‘ (Jessie Nelson, 2002), before his gripping performance in Clint Eastwood’s ”Mystic River” earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003, followed by that obtained for ”Harvey Milk” by Gus Van Sant in 2009. He also won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for his role in ”She’s So Lovely” by Nick Cassavetes. Alongside his acting career, Sean Penn is also a recognized filmmaker whose filmography includes titles such as the Oscar-nominated ”Into the Wild,” ”Flag Day,” ”The Pledge,” ‘Crossing Guard’ and his first film, ‘The Indian Runner’. » As for the Canadian, David Cronenberg, a figure of a new cinema for a long time, he is described as follows: “His reputation as a true auteur has been firmly established thanks to the unique and personal work he produced as a as director and screenwriter. Since his beginnings in underground cinema and the horror genre, he has developed a dramatic body of work of exceptional depth and breadth that has earned him recognition as one of the most influential directors in the world. Critically acclaimed, his films have earned him international recognition. In 1991, his film ”Le Festin nu” was selected for the Berlinale and in 1999, ”eXistenZ” won the Silver Bear. His films Crash, ”Spider”, ”A History of Violence”, ”Cosmopolis”, ”Maps to the Stars”, ”Les Crimes du futur” and ”Les Enceuls” have all were selected in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where ”Crash” won the Special Jury Prize. In 2006, the Filmmakers’ Fortnight in Cannes awarded him the Carrosse d’Or for his entire career. The Venice Film Festival also awarded her a Golden Lion for her entire career in 2018.” Let’s hope that these two global stars cultivate the self-denial dear to Naima Elmcherqui.$
