In a poignant interview given to L’Observateur and published this Saturday, November 2, 2024, Youssou Ndour shared confessions full of nostalgia and emotion, evoking the disappearance of Gaston Madeira, the artist’s tour manager for more than fifteen years. The latter accompanied the Super Étoile tours and played an essential role for Youssou Ndour and his musicians, both on a professional and human level.
Gaston Madeira, often referred to as the “father” of the group, devotedly watched over each member of Super Étoile, making sure they were ready for the stage. “He woke us up, he made us go on stage,” remembers Youssou Ndour. For the artist, Madeira’s absence left “a huge void” in the recent tour, as he was one of the pillars of each show, instilling motivation and passion in the entire team.

Beyond his skills in logistics, Gaston Madeira was also driven by a deep love for Senegalese culture and for his profession, qualities which forged deep bonds with Youssou Ndour and his musicians. This tour, although marked by the absence of Madeira, did not disappoint the fans who came in large numbers. For the singer, each show remains an “event not to be missed”, and despite the pain of the loss, he was able to gather his energy to offer the public a performance that met their expectations.
With emotion, Youssou Ndour concludes by paying a vibrant tribute to his friend and colleague: “May the Almighty grant him Paradise. We missed him a lot. »
