A novice ambassador, from the United States to London, and her husband who has nothing of a prince consort; he was ambassador to Beirut. And he pulls the strings of his wife’s diplomatic career to make her the next American vice president. Around them: the British, a Prime Minister who is perhaps seeking to launch a war against Russia, even if it means triggering attacks in his own country, and a Minister of Foreign Affairs who has a crush on the young diplomat.
The Diplomatit’s one of Netflix’s surprise hits. The American series returns to form for a second season which, once again, combines high-flying espionage, a sometimes satirical dive into politics and diplomacy, and problems of a failing couple. We pick up the story after the surprise explosion of a car bomb in London, at the end of the first season. Three American victims. Who is the culprit? What if it was the British Prime Minister who wanted to launch a war against Russia?
Headlining the series is the more than perfect Keri Russell. We loved her in another couple and spy series: The Americansthe story of two Russian spies installed in the United States. We find her more human than ever, in this role of diplomat, stuck between her professional obligations and her relationship problems. And it is on the toilet seat that she can come to confess to her husband.
A series from a female point of view, written by a woman: Deborah Cahn, already at work in the spy series Homeland, and the political series At home–Blanche
This second season of The Diplomatalways as nervous, also leaves plenty of room for dialogue and multiplies the exchanges aside, or while walking in the streets of London, out of sight and away from the cameras. With a complex plot that combines an attempted coup d’état within the British government, a ploy to counter Scotland’s desire for independence, or the setbacks of an American vice-president.
A second season that goes quickly, only 6 episodes, it’s almost too short, as there are so many interesting characters in The Diplomat season 2 on Netflix.
