Michael Newman, iconic actor from Baywatch, dies at 68

Michael Newman, famous for his role in the series “Baywatch”, died at the age of 68 following heart complications. He had been battling Parkinson’s disease for 18 years.

American actor Michael Newman, known for playing lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman in the cult series “Baywatch”, died on Sunday October 20. He died from heart complications, after battling Parkinson’s disease since 2006. His death was confirmed by his close friend, director Matt Felker. “He was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his death”specifies the press release.

A career marked by authenticity

Unlike his colleagues in the series, Michael Newman had real experience as a lifeguard. Before becoming an actor, he worked in the profession for almost 20 years in Los Angeles County, starting at the age of 10 as a junior lifeguard in Santa Monica. He was the only cast member who actually practiced this profession, which gave his role in “Baywatch” a unique authenticity.

The actor starred in 150 episodes of the series between 1989 and 2000, during which time he also made appearances in spin-off productions such as “Baywatch Nights” and the film “Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay.” In addition to his work as a lifeguard and actor, he also had a career as a firefighter.

A commitment against Parkinson’s disease

Diagnosed in 2006, Michael Newman dedicated the last years of his life to raising funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, dedicated to research into Parkinson’s disease. Despite the illness, he remained active and committed to this cause, seeking to raise awareness and support those affected.

His friend Matt Felker, who recently directed the docuseries “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun,” paid him a glowing tribute on Instagram: “I lost my hero yesterday. Like I told him before he left this Earth. I will see you again. I promise.”
