Olivia Ruiz in concert at the Art Rock festival in Saint-Brieuc, May 17, 2024. MASSED TITOUAN

Place de la Grille, in Saint-Brieuc, a few dozen meters from the city center which hosts the various sites of the Art Rock festival, hang on metal structures large format prints of photographs by Richard Dumas and Antoine Giacomoni . Around fifty portraits of personalities from rock, pop and song. It is one of the two exhibitions of the 41e edition of the multidisciplinary event, and part of the carte blanche given to Etienne Daho – he also programmed the last evening of Art Rock concerts, Sunday May 19, in which he is participating.

Squares at Dumas, with strong contrasts in black and white, widths or heights at Giacomoni, with a mist effect, some compositions too (Lou Reed and Nico), sometimes color (Marianne Faithfull, Françoise Hardy). At the end of the afternoon, Friday May 17, the first day of the festival, wandering from one portrait to another is a beautiful drift. Here, by Dumas, Keith Richards, with his face eaten by the smoke of his cigarette, Chet Baker and the sweetness of his lost gaze… By Giacomoni, Etienne Daho and Daniel Darc (1959-2013), side by side, in their beginnings, young people, Françoise Hardy in pastel shades… And then Elli and Jacno, Miossec, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jacques Dutronc, Patti Smith… To see, beyond the end of the festival, until Sunday May 26.

Of Patti Smith, it is a question when Olivia Ruiz tells the audience of the Grande Scène the strong memory of her first visit to Art Rock (in 2007), when she “met this great lady”. In 2007, Olivia Ruiz was on tour to support the success of her second album The Chocolate Woman (released November 2005). For her present appearance at Art Rock, she sings a few excerpts: this cute Chocolate woman ; Quixote ; the village and people of Marseillette (Aude), where she grew up, mentioned in I’m dragging my feet. There is also She panics And Mushroom pancakes taken from Miss Meteora (2009). Known titles to which the most recent ones from the album are added Reply, published at the beginning of March, eight years later To our loving bodies (2016).

Traveling sounds and forms

From the more marked electro aspect of this new record, she kept, in the opening, The Pachamama, sung in Spanish, in a tight, minimalist rhythmic approach, like, at the end, that of Reply. Yours, Bodies Or Salt (“For you are the salt/Cinnamon, the pepper/You are the sugar, the honey”), sare more organic, crossed with flamenco and Afro-Cuban elements. The arrangements of the old songs have little touches that ensure that this blend with the new stuff is not too brutal.
