The artist from Brooklyn became known in the early 2000s thanks to the New York rap group Natural Elements and then as a solo artist. A firefighter in parallel with his career, he was notably one of the first people to intervene during the attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York.

American rapper and producer Ka died “unexpectedly” this Saturday, October 12, at the age of 52, according to a message published by his loved ones on his Instagram account on Monday.

Originally from Brooklyn and member of the group Natural Elements, Ka also worked, alongside his career as an artist, as a firefighter in New York. He was thus one of the first people to come to the aid of the victims of the attacks against the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, as specified in the press release from his relatives.

“A 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, he risked his life to protect his fellow citizens. (…) He leaves an extraordinary legacy as an artist,” the press release continued.

“The most authentic artist”

Born in Brownsville, Ka, whose real name is Kaseem Ryan, got his start in the New York rap group Natural Elements. In 2008, he then went solo with his first album, Iron Works, praised by critics.

Committed to the idea of ​​remaining an independent artist throughout his career, Ka has released eleven albums produced by his own label, Iron Works. He also organized parties himself to promote his records. His latest album, The Thief Next To Jesuswas released last August.

After the announcement of his death, several artists paid tribute to him on social networks like the American DJ and producer The Alchemist. “I always called him a living prophet because that’s what he was in my eyes,” he wrote on X.

“The most genuine man and artist I have ever had the chance to meet. (…) It was an honor to call you friend and comrade. Rest in peace Kaseem Ryan.”

“Always love and respect for this legend. RIP Ka,” rapper Westside Gunn added on X.
