The disappearance of Bernard Pivot leaves an immense void in the hearts of lovers of literature and the French language, but not only that. If the writer and creator of the show Apostrophes – which he hosted for fifteen years from 1975 to 1990 – died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on May 6, 2024 (the day after his 89th birthday), following cancer, it’s another region , far from the capital, which he had cherished for a long time: that of Beaujolais.

His wishes were respected since it is there that the funeral of Bernard Pivot will take place at the beginning of next week. BFM Lyon announced on Wednesday May 8 that the writer, father of two daughters, Cécile and Agnès, will be buried in Quincié-en-Beaujolais (Rhône) near his parents. Information transmitted to BFM Lyon by the mayor of the municipality. The religious funeral will take place in the Saint-Pierre de Quincié church on Tuesday May 14 at 2:30 p.m.

Born in Lyon and having grown up in the vineyards, Bernard Pivot had been involved in local political life in the past. He had held the position of municipal councilor in Quincié between 1977 and 1983. This strong link with this commune in the Rhône, the man of letters and television had retained throughout his life and the inhabitants will forever maintain an attachment particular to Bernard Pivot. “He was someone we saw in the village who was nice to everyone” a resident testified to France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes after the announcement of his death. “People are all very attached to this person,” added a retiree.

A library in the name of Bernard Pivot in Quincié-en-Beaujolais

Bernard Pivot was such a popular figure in the town where he grew up that a special honor was given to him: that of giving his name to the Quincié library. “Bernard Pivot regularly came to support it by donating books. A large collection of works, many of which are autographed by personalities. Books which will soon join the new village library. As a legacy of Bernard Pivot’s mark on the small town“, reports France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Bernard Pivot knew that his place would be here and nowhere else when he died: “I will come back to Quincié as long as life allows me. Then I know that a place awaits me in the cemetery in my parents’ grave. I know I will be buried in Quincié. It’s not sad to think about it, I’m not immortal“, he confided in 2018 to Progress.
