Shakira can breathe. The Spanish public prosecutor’s office decided, Wednesday May 8, to close the investigation into the Colombian singer for suspicion of tax fraud. He believes that he does not have sufficient information to continue his investigations.

In a statement, the prosecution supported the request to close the case, because it considers that “there are not sufficient clues concerning the commission of the previously mentioned crimes”.

In November 2023, the singer was ordered to pay 6.6 million euros to the Spanish courts as part of another procedure for tax fraud dating back to 2018.

However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office considers that there is “a tax obligation arising from the IRPF and the wealth tax for the 2018 financial year” which can be claimed by both the Tax Agency and the Tax Agency. of Catalonia by administrative means. In other words, it is possible that the tax authorities will demand payment of the considerable sum from Shakira without the need for a trial.

This second case, which is now in the process of being closed, was initiated following a complaint from the public prosecutor’s office according to which the singer allegedly used a “corporate structure” to avoid paying taxes in Spain by using intermediary companies in Luxembourg , the Netherlands, the British Virgin Islands, Malta, Panama and Liechtenstein.

Shakira’s name also appears among those cited in the Pandora Papers, a vast investigation published at the end of 2021 by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, accusing several hundred personalities of having concealed assets in offshore companies, in particular to purposes of tax evasion.
