May 4 and 5 are two days dedicated to national commemorations of the liberation in the Netherlands. Dutch sovereigns usually attend several commemorative events. The two days aim to pay tribute but also to realize that we have lived in peace and freedom since 1945. These two days always end with a large open-air concert in Amsterdam, on the banks of the Amstel, in front of the Royal Theater Carré.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima did not break tradition. The sovereigns were accompanied by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, the outgoing Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, and by Arthur van Dijk, King’s Commissioner in North Holland.

The concert, broadcast live on the First Public Channel, was presented this year by singer Karsu and writer and director Frits Spits. April Darby, Emma Kok, FLEMMING, Gaia Aikman and Guus Meeuwis are some of the artists who performed this year. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima warmly applauded the artists and on several occasions they were caught by the cameras singing along to some songs that they knew by heart.

At the end of the concert, the sovereigns left aboard a boat, greeting the crowd gathered on the quays, to the tune of We’ll Meet Again. For the occasion, Queen Máxima wore a light dress from the Belgian fashion house Natan. She also wore a semi-transparent cape by Valentino.
