The Acolyte promises to be a (small) revolution for Star Wars

Finally a renewal for the saga Star Wars ? After 9 installments of the main saga, two spin-offs and a number of series on Disney+ and special shows on television, the galaxy far, far away opens a new chapter of its history. Exit the Skywalker dynasty and the Empire, it is now a matter of exploring the High Republic. For the first time in live action, Lucasfilm’s license frees itself from its original temporality to immerse spectators several hundred years before Anakin Skywalker was born.

Under the leadership of Leslye Headland, the series will follow a young Jedi (Amanda Stenberg) who finds his master (Jung-jae Lee) after several years. The duo will investigate a series of murders that strike the galaxy during times of peace. As new clues emerge, sinister forces emerge from the shadows and could change the fate of the galaxy forever. In subtext, The Acolyte will tell the story of a new clash between the light and dark sides of the force. The creator of Russian Doll will have to juggle a universe very different from that presented in the original saga. The new images also confirm a radical change in aesthetic. The series swaps the immaculate suits of the Empire’s troops for dark and mysterious creatures who will be at the epicenter of the story.

It’s a good idea ?

Developed since 2018, under the code name “Luminous”the High Republic finds its Source in the novels published by Lucasfilm. Several writers set out to build a new era far from Darth Vader, Palpatine and the Skywalker heirs. The story takes root in a period of relative peace, where the Galactic Republic continues its expansion beyond the Outer Rim. By changing point of view, by abandoning emblematic characters, The Acolyte already has an ace up its sleeve. The narration does not risk tainting the narrative elements of the original saga. The latest addition to the catalog will also benefit from a certain element of surprisethe same one that had allowed Andor to stand out among the best offerings of its kind on Disney+.

But this renewal cannot be the only argument in favor of frequent viewing, it will be necessary to The Acolyte a certain mastery of the format and mythology to convince the many early fans, tired by years of narrative wandering. This release could also be an opportunity to attract some new spectators, who could be discouraged by the immensity of the lore of the saga initiated in 1977 with A New Hope.

The appointment is thus made for the June 5 on Disney+. Until then, we can expect the platform to intensify the promotional campaign to generate interest among its subscribers. Note that so far, Star Wars not only met with audience success. The last season of The Mandalorian, which is nevertheless one of the most popular series, did not live up to the company’s expectations. This new release should therefore be closely monitored by the firm and analysts.
