The Simpsons have been broadcast on American television since 1989. Contrary to what the episode broadcast on September 29, 2024 wanted people to believe, the series is not over.
TELEVISION – Is The Simpsons over? The animated series, present since 1989 on American television, broadcast the first episode of its 36th season on Sunday, September 29, which was titled “Bart’s birthday”. From the first minutes, it is announced that this episode is the last of the series. Enough to worry the fans… except that it’s a joke.
The episode opened with the cartoon version of Conan O’Brien, American animator and former screenwriter of Simpsons. In a movie theater, he comes to celebrate with all the guest stars who have appeared over the seasons the end of the iconic show.
“It’s an honor to be with you for the Simpsons finale. I knew I was the right person to do it because I hosted the last issue of three of my own shows… That’s right, Fox decided to discontinue The Simpsons.”says Conan O’Brien.
There will be many more episodes
“Not many people know this, but Fox has been trying to shut down the show for many years. (…) Many episodes that have become classics were designed to be endings”he continues.
Conan O’Brien then reveals that the writers used artificial intelligence to imagine this last episode. Thus, Mr. Burns dies leaving his fortune by mistake to the employees of the power plant, Principal Skinner leaves the Springfield school, Moe’s bar closes, Milhouse moves…
Then a turnaround. At the end of the episode, Bart realizes that celebrating his birthday doesn’t fit with the cartoon in which he has been 10 for 35 years. Homer tries the stranger when he refuses to blow out his candles and then everything goes back to the way it was. This is no longer the last issue of The Simpsons.
If the situation may have caused confusion, fans were also able to notice inconsistencies as highlighted Variety : season 36 has just started and many more episodes are expected. The next one to be broadcast is also called Yellow Lotus, and is a parody of the hit series The White Lotus. The season will be available on Disney+ in France in summer 2025.
