A Dies irae of this dazzling, such a musical cataclysm sweeping through the Victoria Hall, we do not remember having heard it in Geneva’s memory. On Wednesday evening, Myung-Whun Chung, the Orchester de la Suisse Romande (OSR) and the choir of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome took terror to the extreme, in the most theatrical and lyrical of requiems.
There is no question here of sound power or decibel saturation. But from a tsunami of anguish and fury. A surge of terror in the face of death and the implacable final judgment. With the underlying theme – we can’t help but think about it – despondency in the face of the inhumanity of the world.
