Will the Louvre have to return the Mona Lisa? The Council of State is currently examining the request

A mysterious association named International Refunds asks the Louvre Museum to return the Mona Lisa. The association believes that the decision of King François I to “appropriate“the work is “non-existent”.

International Refunds claims to act on behalf of the descendants of the painter’s heirs Leonardo DeVinci. The association’s request is examined by the Council of State, the highest French administrative court. The association wishes that The Mona Lisa either “written off” from the inventory of the Louvre Museum in the event of victory.

Not a first

Previous similar requests from the association regarding other works were never successful. The Council of State had previously rejected a request from the association concerning objects from the Château de Fontainebleau and the Summer Palace in Beijing.

In its previous decision, the Council of State had ruled that the association had not “standing to act”. The Mona Lisa is on display at Louvre Since 1797 and, despite this demand, should remain in this museum, which attracts between eight and ten million visitors a year, mainly to see Mona Lisa.
