The Black Keys return to Ohio

To be and to have been… This is a bit the problem of The Black Keys, who, like many groups, had released a handful of remarkable albums to name only “Rubber Factory” in 2004, “Brothers” in 2010 and ” Camino” in 2011. The duo from Akron, Ohio, reached the heights in the early 2010s but has since struggled to deliver new titles that combine strength and punch. By dredging up too much pop, these heroes of a garage blues revival were resolutely losing their soul or seeking salvation in Mississippi’s past – with the respectable “Delta Kream” in 2021.

These “Ohio Players”, from the name of their album, maintain the course of catchy tunes – sometimes a stone’s throw from a Steve Miller Band – but respect a little more the craftsmanship which made them known worldwide, this blues rock produced like a Californian hip-hop track. Now with this “classic rock” touch which reminds us that time passes…

“Forgotten Ocean/Assordante” by Junee.

A side project, an escape into dreams. Aquatic atmosphere, deep flowing notes: here is Junee, Fhunyue Gao and Zoé Sjollema, from the group Citron Citron. Cornaqué par l’Éclair, an all-terrain band from Geneva who are very excited at the idea of publishing this record, this first opus, strange as well as fascinating, is published by the Stone Pixels label.

The title: “Océan Oublié/Assordante”, seven synthetic tracks, gurgling keyboards, cosmic electronics, royally undulating theremin, caressing material, melancholic as in septante, composing a dreamy bed on which the female voices rest, in Italian , in German, in French. It seems like the echo of a medieval ballad. We let ourselves be caught up in this subtle flow.

Music that smells good

Eric Le Sage and Frank Braley bring together their twenty fingers to perform on two pianos the waltzes, lullabies and caprices from the pens of Emmanuel Chabrier and Reynaldo Hahn. We explore the “Romantic Waltzes” of the eldest and especially the delicious cycle “The Untied Ribbon” of the younger one. In this collection of twelve waltzes, Reynaldo Hahn cultivates the old-fashioned charm of France at the turn of the 20th century.e century, with its evocative titles: “Indolent decrees of chance”, “The embalmed half-sleep”, “The open cage”. Salon music, certainly, but which sublimates a consummate art of evanescent dance initiated by Chopin, in a vein that is both popular and refined. Our two pianists give it their all, perfuming these arabesques with a freshness that is both creamy and energizing. Eric Le Sage is the guest of the Pully musical weekend, May 3 and 4 (wempully.ch).
