The new adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic with Pierre Niney joins the official selection of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

A nice spotlight for this blockbuster made in France, in theaters on June 28.

Michel Hazanavicius will present in competition “The Most Precious of Goods”, an animated film about the Shoah with the voice of the late Jean-Louis Trintignant.

This is the promise of a truly beautiful tricolor red carpet. The Count of Cristo, the new adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic will be unveiled during the 77th Cannes Film Festival next month, the organizers announced this Monday. The film directed by Alexandre De La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte will be presented in the Cannes Première section, ahead of its release throughout France on June 28.

Star of this blockbuster made in France with a budget of 43 million euros, Pierre Niney plays Edmond Dantes, a young sailor who returns to take revenge on the “friends” who had him sent to prison when he was was preparing to marry the beautiful Mercédès, played by Anaïs Demoustier. Around them, we will find Bastien Bouillon, the hero of The Night of the 12thLaurent Laffite or even Anamaria Vartolomei, the revelation of The Event.

The last film by Jean-Louis Trintignant

The Count of Cristo is not the only addition to the selection revealed on April 11 by general delegate Thierry Frémaux. Two years after opening with Cut!Michel Hazanavicius joins the competition with The most valuable commodity, an animated film which tells the story of the baby of a Jewish family deported to Auschwitz, taken in by a Polish family. The narrator’s voice was recorded by Jean-Louis Trintignant shortly before his death in June 2022.

Two other films join the race for the Palme d’Or. Three kilometers to the end of the world by the Romanian Emanuel Parvu and The Seed of The Sacred Fig of the Iranian Mohamed Rasoulov, released in February 2023 after spending several months behind bars by the Tehran regime due to his criticism of police violence during demonstrations.

Among the other additions to the selection announced this Monday also includes the Special Screening screening of Spectators by Arnaud Deplechin and Lula, a documentary by American director Oliver Stone on the Brazilian president. The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, whose jury will be chaired by the director of barbie Greta Gerwig will begin on May 14 with the screening of Quentin Dupieux’s new film, The Second Act.
