For several months, a new trend has been all the rage on the Asian market: pingti. These almost identical copies of luxury products, often designed with quality materials similar to the originals, are attracting an increasingly large clientele. Influenced by a difficult economic context, Chinese consumers see this as a way of adopting a certain level of standing, without the exorbitant price. This phenomenon thus calls into question the exclusivity that makes high-end items successful, and consequently their very essence.

On social networks, on e-commerce sites and in the street, it is not uncommon to come across this type of bag or clothing, almost identical to those of the big brands but without the logos that make them famous. Although the phenomenon currently only affects the Middle Kingdom, the luxury sector is expressing concern.

Pingti covers a wide range of products: from Hermès bags to Prada clothing, Lululemon leggings and even pieces from more popular brands like Nike or Uniqlo. These imitations are sold mainly through e-commerce platforms like Taobao or Douyin (the Chinese version of the social network TikTok). For example, a bag inspired by the famous Hermès Lindy can be purchased for around 3,700 yuan (around 470 euros), well below the thousands of euros demanded for the original.
