Why this book?

Because this first novel recalls a miscellaneous fact from 2013 when a woman “guided by a diabolical force” abandoned her 15-month-old daughter on the beach at high tide. Director Alice Diop made an award-winning film about it at Venice. This time, in this novel, the child is a boy and there is no question of a diabolical force or any imbalance in the mother. Matthieu Gounelle gives voice to a rather sensible, rational woman, who tells an interlocutor or interlocutors the story of a particular day and details her bond with Matthieu – the only character to have a first name in the book – her son.Because there is love between this mother and her child.
