Edmond Vidal, a legendary figure of French organized crime, died during the night from Sunday to Monday, we learned from our colleagues at Lyon Mag. Aged 79, the man nicknamed “Momon” died of pancreatic cancer. His death marks the end of an era for French organized crime, and leaves only one survivor among the members of the famous “Lyonnais gang”.

Edmond Vidal is best known for leading the “Lyonnais gang”, a group of criminals who made a name for themselves in the 1970s following a series of spectacular robberies. The most famous of these was nicknamed the “heist of the century” and took place on June 30, 1971 at the Strasbourg post office. On that day, five members of the gang, including “Momon”, stole almost 12 million francs in less than five minutes (around 7 million euros).

His criminal actions ended in 1974, when he was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. Edmond Vidal had served his sentence before retiring from the world of crime. Settled in the Lyon region, he had then devoted himself to his family and the management of(…) - 20minutes
