Decode your dog’s behavior

ANIMALS – You don’t need to be a canine mentalist to read your pet’s mind: you just need to pay attention to the telltale signals.

Head turned

One of the most powerful tools in a dog’s communication arsenal strangely involves no physical contact, either with their owners or the object of their desire. Instead, they simply use their gaze, turning their heads between what they want and the person who can help them achieve it. Of course, it may take them a few tries to get their message across. According to Dr. O’Hara, “Head-turning in dogs refers to a behavior called ‘gaze-shifting’: it is when the subject switches his gaze between his goal or target and the person from whom he is seeking help. This has the effect of drawing the person’s attention to what he is seeking help with. Gaze-shifting is a ‘constant checking’ behavior. It suggests that the individual is assessing the relationship between the person he is trying to reach and the goal he is seeking to achieve. Nearly all of the dogs in our study were able to do this.”
