Nigeria is in mourning after a tragic road accident. An explosion caused by the collision between a fuel tanker and a truck carrying passengers and livestock has killed at least 59 people, authorities said Monday.

The collision took place on the night of Saturday to Sunday, shortly after midnight, on a road in the Agaie region, in the state of Niger, in the north of Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa.

Fifty cows burned alive

Ibrahim Husseini, spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), further indicated that “more victims may be discovered as the ongoing evacuation of the accident site continues.”

The victims were immediately buried after the accident on Sunday, as is customary in the northern Muslim state. Images of bodies being charred before burial were released by NSEMA. A crane and a van were also involved in the accident and about 50 cows were burned alive.

Accidents are common on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads, largely due to speeding and disregard for traffic laws. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called on Monday for “(…) - 20minutes
