Faced with the saturation of emergencies in several regions of Quebec, exacerbated by the circulation of respiratory viruses and a new outbreak of measles, the Quebec Association of Pharmacists Owners (AQPP) joins public authorities to encourage the population to be vaccinated and to take advantage of the services offered in pharmacies.
Pharmacy vaccination
The vaccination campaign against COVID-19 and influenza continues. At-risk individuals, such as children, the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions, are especially encouraged to get vaccinated. In addition, adults born since 1980 who have not received two doses of measles vaccine and any other unprotected person should be immunized. These vaccines are free and quickly accessible by appointment via the Clic Santé portal or the website of the patient’s usual pharmacy.
What to do if you have a respiratory virus or have been in contact with a confirmed case of measles
People who test positive for COVID-19 or influenza and are at risk of complications can contact their pharmacist to receive antiviral treatment, if they meet the eligibility criteria. In the event of measles, unvaccinated people should not go to pharmacies and must follow the directives of public authorities.
Services offered in pharmacy
Faced with high demand on the health system, pharmacies play a crucial role in relieving pressure on hospitals by providing local care. Here are some services available in pharmacies:
• Obtaining prescriptions for various minor conditions (e.g. urinary tract infection, shingles, acne, heartburn, etc.).
• Extension of existing orders.
• Monitoring of chronic diseases such as COPD, diabetes, high blood pressure.
• Advice on managing side effects of drug treatments.
• Screening for certain diseases by throat swab (under conditions).
• Training in the use of the opioid antidote.
Develop good reflexes for fast and efficient service
To ensure smooth management of pharmacy services, it is recommended to make an appointment in advance for vaccinations, refill your medications 48 hours before and come to the pharmacy during the week during office hours if possible. It is also preferable to regularly consult the same pharmacist for optimal care of your health file.
