a type of oil involved? Here’s what a recent study reveals!

Colon cancer affects more and more people in and around the world, and they are younger and younger. Scientists have just discovered that it could be due to a particular type of oil…

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, considered a silent cancer, it develops discreetly without the first symptoms being able to be diagnosed. In 2023, 47,582 new cases have been recorded in France… If we generally think that colorectal cancer only affects people over 60, this is less and less the case because it affects younger and younger populations. According to a recent study published in the journal JAMAle cancer colorectal could even soon become the leading cause of cancer death in the 20-49 age group.

As the old saying goes: “Prevention is better than cure“… Et researchers have just discovered that a certain type of oil promotes the development of colon cancer, particularly in younger populations. We give you the results of this edifying study here!

Popular oils in question

The increase in colon cancer cases may be partly due to the use of a certain type of cooking oil that is widely used around the world.. These are oils that are very present in processed foods and fast food dishes. According to a new US government study published in the journal Gut, the oils concerned are seed-based. These are mainly sunflower, grape seed or corn oils. Scientists have done this research after examining the tumors of more than 80 people, aged 30 to 85, suffering from colon cancer, according to the site Doctissimo.

The researchers actually found a high level of bioactive lipids in the tumors they analyzed. And this type of lipids would come directly from seed-based oils.

Oily molecules promote inflammation

When the body digests seed-based oils, it produces oily molecules that increase chronic inflammation in the body, which is responsible for the development of many cancers. including that of the colon. But these molecules, or bioactive lipids, also have the effect of preventing the body from healing, which further encourages the establishment of cancer in the body.

“Cancer acts like a chronic wound that does not heal. If your body is constantly exposed to ultra-processed foods high in added sugars, saturated fats, and inflammatory seed oils, your ability to heal this wound is reduced. This promotes inflammation and suppresses the immune systemthus allowing the cancer to grow” explains Dr. Timothy Yeatman, director at the TGH Cancer Institute research center, in an article in The Independent.
