Immunotherapy to improve the prognosis of colorectal cancer

The importance of screening

Colorectal cancer is a slow-growing disease. Its prognosis depends on the stage at the time of diagnosis, hence the importance of screening. From 50 years old to 74 years old, women and men are invited every two years by Health Insurance to be screened. It is now possible to order a screening kit covered by Social Security and receive it at home. Screening helps identify polyps before they develop into cancer.

The main symptoms are the presence of blood in the stools after 50 years, a change in intestinal transit, abdominal pain, weight loss, iron deficiency, or a palpable abdominal mass.

Advances in immunotherapy

In some cases, cancer cells are able to silence the immune system, rendering T cells inactive to fight the disease. The principle of immunotherapy is to wake up this immune system so that it can destroy cancer cells.

In a previous study presented at the annual congress of theAmerican Society of Clinical Oncology in June 2024, scientists showed the effectiveness of pembrolizumab, another immunotherapy treatment. This treatment allowed large, high-risk tumors to be dissolved by the immune system, sparing patients the need for invasive surgery. He received a marketing authorization for this type of tumors.
