It was at the chapel of the Chicoutimi hospital that the unveiling of the Dr. Aurélien Carré space took place last week, a place dedicated to patients wishing to obtain medical assistance in dying.
After receiving his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Doctor Carré requested medical assistance in dying in 2022, so as not to suffer the devastating effects of this terrible disease. Unfortunately, places like that of Chicoutimi are very rare and the son of the late doctor, Bruno Carré, explains to us where the idea of establishing such an arrangement came from.
“Dad was always a man of projects. When he wanted to obtain medical assistance in dying and he couldn’t find a place for it, he told himself that something had to be done. My brother-in-law Stéphane then proposed the idea of creating a space like this. It was too avant-garde then, but now it’s a first and I think there will be many more. »
For the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Denyse Gauthier, emotion was at its peak, but she wanted the memory of her husband to be honored. The establishment of this space is not only a legacy from the Carré family to the people in the region, but a way of offering comfort to people at the end of their lives.
“I’m happy to leave something in his name at the hospital, after he worked there for 40 years. It’s very beautiful, it moves me a lot. »
According to the president of the Fondation de ma vie, Kathie Gravel, this announcement is a way of telling those who have made the choice that they now have a place to go through this stage. She also mentions that the location is intended to be logical, since it is in a suitable and safe environment, in order to provide this type of care.
“The Foundation listened to a need. We sat down with the hospital authorities and started planning the project. Several speakers participated, but it is the type of project that the Foundation likes to design because it affects everyone. » concluded Ms. Gravel.
