This “ultra-processed” spread would reduce blood pressure according to a study: explanations from a professor

If a balanced diet is recommended for all people suffering from high blood pressure, a study has highlighted the beneficial role of a spread. A result that no one expected…

According to figures from the World Health Organization, nearly 1.28 billion people aged 30 to 79 are affected by hypertension. A serious phenomenon, especially if left untreated. In fact, it can lead to cardiovascular accidents and other health problems such as diabetes or kidney complications.

When we focus on this problem, we see that hypertension has many risk factors such as alcohol and tobacco consumption, sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, but also diet. Thus, it is important to pay attention to what you put on your plate to combat this condition. But against all odds, a scientist has explained that an “ultra-processed” spread could help against the phenomenon.

This spread is useful for lowering blood pressure

Tim Spector is a professor of epidemiology. He co-founded the ZOE Health Study, a form of large-scale survey in which 96,000 people took part. He was interested in lifestyle habits and diet. Thanks to the data collected, scientists were able to compare the associations between diet and blood pressure. “People who have a lot of potassium in their diet have lower blood pressures and studies have shown that this is more important than salt, when adding potassium supplements rather than reducing salt. And it’s a major discovery because it’s something that everyone can do. It is possible to increase potassium in your diet”, he explained in a Youtube video.

So, the scientist carried out a ranking of foods containing the most potassium. And to his great surprise, it was a spread that won the prize. This is the Marmitevery popular in Anglo-Saxon countries. With a taste similar to a meat broth, it is made from brewer’s yeast which contains a large dose of potassium. It is also composed of vegetables and spices.

The other improbable food cited by the scientist

Although it seems very surprising that first place on the podium goes to this spread, it is not the only processed product that is among the top. There are also potato chips.. Enough to leave more than one speechless, just like Tim Spector: “It’s quite unexpected, isn’t it? Quality chips have a lot of potassium and obviously have little salt. But if you think that potassium is more important, it’s really interesting.”
