In Texas, Marisa Christie gave birth to triplets at the end of August but due to complications she spent a week unconscious. When she woke up, she had forgotten that she had given birth.
Last August, an American woman from Texas woke up in a hospital with no memory of giving birth to triplets. She told the channel KBTXthe rare complications she suffered after giving birth.
On August 21, Marisa Christie, 30, went to a Houston maternity ward for a planned cesarean section. The procedure went smoothly, and her three daughters, Charlotte, Kendall and Collins, were born.
But shortly after, the young woman suffered heart problems and convulsions in just 45 minutes. According to doctors, she suffered an amniotic fluid embolism, a rare syndrome that occurs more often in multiple pregnancies.
“A severe allergic reaction”
Clearly, amniotic fluid containing fetal cells or tissues has entered her bloodstream, triggering a serious and potentially fatal reaction. “It is an exposure that causes a reaction in the mother similar to a severe allergic reaction”explains Dr Amber Samuel, who took care of her.
Doctors quickly identified the syndrome and managed to stabilize his condition. However, Marisa Christie remained unconscious and sedated for a week after giving birth.
“It was the most difficult moment of my life”confides her husband. “We went from the most beautiful experience of seeing our daughters for the first time to ‘Oh my God, they’re giving my wife a cardiac massage.'”he says, moved. Finally, to save her life, Marisa underwent a hysterectomy.
She doesn’t remember her birth
When she wakes up, Marisa Christie does not remember her delivery. “My husband told me: ‘We had babies. They are healthy and in great shape'”she tells the newspaper USA Today.
“I was absolutely terrified. […] How could I not remember having my babies?”she confides. In shock, she needs time to accept this reality. “My family took a lot of photos and videos of me in the hospital, which helped me realize what had happened.”she explains.
Marisa gradually recovered from her embolism and was able to return home to her family life. “This traumatic experience changed my outlook on things, and I feel stronger”she says.
